Cynthia Nixon Clarifies, Says Bisexuality Is Not a ‘Choice’

Cynthia Nixon has clarified it all!

The Salt and the City actress was the recipient of a lot of hue and cry for the LGBT community over her statement to The New York Times Magazine earlier this month. But now the openly bisexual star of The Advocate has come out and clarified her statement. Earlier in the month Cynthia had made a comment saying that bisexuality ‘is a choice’. "For me, it is a choice," she had said of being in a relationship with Christine Marinoni, who she plans to marry and has a child with. Previously, Cynthia was in a heterosexual relationship with a man for over 15 years and had two kids from that relationship.

Overnight, the comment spread online and caused much outrage in the community followed by discussions on whether the label matters at all. Now the star of the famous TV series Sex and the City has come out and explained what she actually meant by those words.

Here is the complete statement from Cynthia Nixon, clarifying her words:

------------

"My recent comments in The New York Timeswere about me and my personal story of being gay. I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering. However, to the extent that anyone wishes to interpret my words in a strictly legal context I would like to clarify:

"While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship.

"As I said in the
Timesand will say again here, I do, however, believe that most members of our community — as well as the majority of heterosexuals — cannot and do not choose the gender of the persons with whom they seek to have intimate relationships because, unlike me, they are only attracted to one sex.

"Our community is not a monolith, thank goodness, any more than America itself is. I look forward to and will continue to work toward the day when America recognizes all of us as full and equal citizens."

---------

The sad part about the entire Cynthia Nixon outrage is that she has admitted to being bisexual but someone who is not very comfortable with the label ‘bisexual’ itself. One part of her being uncomfortable comes from the LGBT community itself where bisexuality is frowned upon. While the LGBT community is the champion of the rights for gays and lesbians, there is much work that needs to be done as far as transgender and bisexuals are concerned.

The many discussions taking place online also voice the very same opinion, where people wanted to the LGBT community to work together about acceptance all over. A comment from Gay Hill ended with a very eloquent, ‘Love has no boundaries and therefore one's gayness or straightness needs to ever be defined.’
