A new Rick Perry ad is getting a swirl of negative attention from around the web. Check out the video here to see why.
The new advertisement, a 30-second YouTube clip titled “Strong,” features the Republican presidential candidate claiming that there is something “wrong in this country” when gay members of the military are allowed to serve openly, but schoolchildren cannot “openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.” The Texas Governor then accuses President Obama of waging a “war on religion,” that he promises to turn around if elected.
Since being uploaded on Tuesday, the video has been viewed about 750,000 times – and hardly anyone seems to like it. Over 275,000 have disliked the video, while just about 6,000 have actually liked it. While comments on YouTube have been disabled by the governor’s campaign, an open thread on the official Rick Perry Facebook page has been left open.
The majority of comments there have not been good, with some posters even becoming hostile and threatening. Here are just a few of the more recent comments:
“Congratulations you just officially lost the campaign race. Stop preaching your hateful religion and worry about politics!”
“Just lost my vote. You sir make me want to change my political party.”
“you should really be ashamed of yourself. We do not need a bigot running our country in it's current frail state. IF you really love your country, you'll apologize, Hang up your cowboy hat, and disappear.”
Perry isn’t the only Republican presidential candidate to be called out for his outspoken stance on gay rights. Michele Bachmann has been challenged on her views countless times, most recently by a young boy who told her “my mom is gay and she doesn’t need fixing.” The video of Bachmann’s stunned reaction to the boy is one of the single most entertaining things we’ve seen since her campaign began.
Rick Santorum has also expressed his dislike of gay marriage, using straw-man arguments to attempt influence over the matter. What do you think of the new Rick Perry ad, though? Does the Texas governor deserve this rash of hate over the YouTube video, or are people overreacting?
President Barack Obama sharply rebuked his Republican rivals Saturday, saying anyone who wants to be commander in chief must support the entire U.S. military, including gay service members.
