Archie Comics creators have announced that the Archie – one of America’s beloved comic characters – will be killed off in the upcoming issue of Life With Archie.

The adventures of the clumsy and flirty redhead Archie Andrews have captured America’s imagination since 1941. Over the years, Archie has come to be known as one of the most recognizable American comics.

According to the creators, Archie’s death will be written in the final issue of the five-year-old series Life With Archie in July.

Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater said in an interview to CNN, “I think it’s the natural conclusion to the Life With Archie series. Archie dies as he lived—heroically. He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us—the best of us. Our strengths and our faults.
