Since the Emmy Awards this year came less than two months before the presidential elections, a lot of celebrities brought up politics in their speeches, mainly including jokes that targeted Donald Trump’s xenophobia.
And so when comedian Aziz Ansari came onstage to present the award for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special, he made sure to take a jab at the Republican nominee’s proposed ban on Muslim immigrants.
"After careful consideration, I’ve decided I’m going with Trump,” Ansari, who is of Indian descent, quipped. “Which is why I recommend getting rid of all Muslim and Hispanic nominees. Mom and dad, I know I just thanked you, but you need to be escorted out.”
Ansari also poked fun at the 2016 Oscars for its lack of diversity — for two years in a row.
"This would be so much easier if we were at the Oscars,” he said.
He then went on to point out stars who could directly be affected by Trump’s ban, such as Latina actress America Ferrera.
“America Ferrera — nice try changing your name to ‘America’, but you’re out.”
