Benedict Cumberbatch Is Getting Married!

Bad news for Cumberbabes. A small notice in the Forthcoming Marriages section of The Times – a British daily national newspaper – broke millions of hearts all over the world on Wednesday.

The barely 200-word announcement stated that Benedict Cumberbatch – the British heartthrob famous for his Sherlock television series on BBC One – got engaged to his girlfriend Sophie Hunter. It reads:

"Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."

The pair were confirmed as a couple earlier this year, after they were pictured together at the French Open.

Before you run off to type in “Sophie Hunter” into Google, here’s what you should know about Cumberbatch’s soon-to-be wife.

Hunter, 36, studied French and Italian at Oxford University before enrolling at the prestigious Jacques Lecoq theater school in Paris. She is a theater director and, like her fiancé, an actor, too. She played Annabel Blythe-Smith to Cumberbatch’s Henry Clark in the 2009 thriller Burlesque Fairytales.

“She won the Samuel Beckett award for writing and directing her play The Terrific Electric in 2007, and has since staged productions of Britten’s opera The Rape of Lucretia, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Ibsen’s Ghosts,” according to the Guardian.

Numerous tabloids reported last month that Cumberbatch had headed to Scotland to seek the blessing of Hunter's mother for their marriage. Turns out, the rumors were true after all.

Previously, the Imitation Game star dated actress Olivia Poulet for almost 12 years. Later, he reportedly dated London-based artist Anna James in late 2011, but the couple separated in 2012.

Predictably, the shocking announcement has set off a Twitter storm, including both wishes and a lot of heartbreak:
