Beyoncé surprised Walmart holiday shoppers in Tewksbury, Massachusetts this weekend when she paid a visit to the store.
After strolling around the store to pick up a few things, interacting with fans along the way, the star jumped on the loudspeaker and announced that she would be paying for the first $50 of everyone in the store's holiday purchases.
The store erupted in cheers, and a beaming Beyoncé rang up gift cards for 750 people, according to Boston.com, totaling $37,500.
"It was amazing, quite a scene," Walmart spokeswoman Sarah McKinney told local Fox affiliate WGHP. "Everybody was so excited when she came in, and it's so great what she did for our customers right before Christmas."
Particularly around the holidays, such generosity and thoughtfulness must be commended. Celebrities in particular have a significant and influential role in our culture, so it is always refreshing to see them embracing this role in a positive manner. While there is no denying that the act brought the talented star some nice publicity, it appears to be genuine, and certainly appreciated.
