Who doesn’t love a good Britney Spears song? Somali pirates apparently. A Scottish merchant navy officer reported that guns are rarely needed to prevent Somali pirates from attacking commercial ships. The officer stated that, instead, they simply blast Britney Spears songs on the loud speakers and the Somali pirates back off!

Merchant navy officer Rachel Owens reported in an interview to Metro UK that the most effective Britney Spears songs for preventing Somali pirates from attacking are: Baby one more time and Oops I did it again. Our guess is they discovered that through trial and error. However, the security team had a method to their madness. They knew that Somali pirates hate western culture, so they figured; why not use an icon of western culture, such as Britney Spears songs, to prevent them from attacking.

If you were wondering, don’t Britney Spears songs disturb their own crew? According to Rachel Owens, it doesn’t. “The speakers can be aimed solely at the pirates so as not to disturb the crew,” stated Owens.

The question begs to be asked, is it only Britney Spears songs that detour attackers? Or are other singers equally effective? And, if a non-violent approach for protection is effective in this context, why can’t something like this be used in other arenas, like war? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
