2016 has been a horrible year in many respects.
Along with witnessing many unimaginable things, such as Donald Trump becoming president and the Brexit, the world also experienced a rise in hate crimes, racism and Islamophobia, which just made things even worse.
However, the saddest part is that as the New Year approaches, one can’t help but look back at all the famous people we lost this year. For many, these celebrities were a significant part of their childhood and teen years, and a world without them just feels incomplete.
The year started off with the unexpected demise of David Bowie, who impacted millions of people with his music. The next blow came to Harry Potter fans, who lost Alan Rickman, known for playing the role of Professor Snape in the movies based off the best-selling fantasy series.
From here, things just worsened. Rickman was followed by Harper Lee, who had become an important part of people’s lives with her book “To Kill A Mockingbird.”
Nancy Reagan, George Martin, Rob Ford, Garry Shandling, Zaha Hadid and Doris Roberts also passed away within the next couple of months, leaving thousands of fans shocked.
The world collectively mourned when Prince, the award-winning musical innovator and beloved cultural figure known for hits like “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry” and “Let's Go Crazy,” died of an opioid overdose.
One of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century, boxer Muhammad Ali, soon followed suit and Gordie Howe, Anton Yelchin, Bill Cunningham, Pat Summitt, Elie Wiesel, Gene Wilder, Arnold Palmer joined the list.
The last leg of 2016 brought with it the deaths of Agnes Nixon, Shimon Peres, Leonard Cohen, Janet Reno, Gwen Ifill and Florence Henderson, to name the few.
Unfortunately things didn’t end here, as Fidel Castro, John Glenn, Alan Thicke, Zsa Zsa Gabor also left this world, and just when people were hoping the year would come to an end already, we lost beloved singer George Michael and “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher.
Her mother, the iconic Debbie Reynolds, couldn’t bear the loss of Fisher and died of a stroke a day later.
