Rap legend Dr. Dre has all but confirmed that he has become the first hip hop artist ever to join the billionaire club. Yes. The West Coast MC is the first rapper dead or alive to amass a fortune that would need nine frigging zeroes.
News emerged late last night that tech giant Apple is close to acquiring Beats Electronics, which Dre and music executive Jimmy Iovine co-own, in a $3.2 billion deal.
While no official confirmation from any of the two parties has arrived yet, actor Tyrese Gibson has shared a series of celebratory videos on his Instagram account, in which Dre has clearly announced that his net worth has now exceeded $1 billion.
With all their pals gathered at Dre's studio and in celebratory mood, the Fast and Furious series star posted the video with the messages:
"How did I end up in the studio with Dr Dre ON THE night his deal went public that he did with Apple 3.2 BILLION!!!! The BEATS HEADPHONES JUST CHANGED HIP HOP!!!!!"
Tyrese then asked Forbes to update their famous Forbes 400 list because, obviously, Dre belongs on it. The magazine itself weren't that sure that the sale would net Dre enough $$$ to join the billi club, but Tyrese and Dre's confidence suggests it's not a matter to have any doubts about.
Then, Dre announced the big news himself. Watch out for Tyrese crip walking when the words came out of his mouth.
When this becomes official, Dre will leapfrog P. Diddy into the top spot of money men from the rap game. The Bad Boy Records founder is worth $700 million, which means Dre's lead at the top would be quite a big one. Jay-Z is the current third with $520 million.
