Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson is suspended, and fans are livid.
After Robertson made several statements regarding homosexuality in an interview with GQ and was subsequently suspended from the show, viewers reacted in a variety of ways, with a number of public figures and organizations coming to his aid, while others further condemned him.
Here are just a few of these reactions:
Something tells me Phil Robertson doesn't like Glee.— Zach Braff (@zachbraff) December 19, 2013
Free speech is endangered species; those "intolerants" hatin' & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all— Sarah Palin (@SarahPalinUSA) December 19, 2013
I'd hate homosexuals, too, if I looked like the guy from duck dynasty.— Anthony Jeselnik (@anthonyjeselnik) December 19, 2013
Phil Robertson is not a 'victim of political correctness'. He's a victim of his own repulsively racist, homophobic bigotry. #DuckDynasty— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) December 19, 2013
I wish everyone would stop attacking Duck Dynasty. Phil Robertson has as much right to say he doesn't understand... http://t.co/zae847XA6V— Cara Parrish (@CaraFnParrish) December 19, 2013
As seen above, American politician Sarah Palin and many others hailed Robertson's suspension as a denial of free speech. Like it or not, celebrities are thrown into the spotlight, and their statements are subject to a high degree of scrutiny. Naturally, A&E needs to look out for their own interests, but at some point, does this become the denial of basic rights?
Earlier Wednesday, Robertson issued the following statement in response to the backlash:
"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together," he says. "However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."
What do you think about Phil Robertson’s comments? Do you think that they warranted his removal from the show?
