With a towering 6-foot-2 figure and a well shaved look to make any lady weak in the knees, Rick Malambri is on top of his game, starring in the film franchise known to upstart the careers of Hollywood newcomers like Channing Tatum. As Rick relishes in the success of Step Up 3D, Carbonated TV sits down for a chat with the star who’s dancing in and out of life’s many complicated dimensions.
The stars of the Step Up franchise usually come from an extensive background. The immense talent and formal dance training of each cast member is presented within the first five minutes of the film; however, Rick Malambri reveals his background was in acting when joining the film. According to Malambri, the film franchise wanted to evolve into a more mature storyline which demanded Malambri’s character to be the designated leader rather than the head dancer. Naturally, more character development was needed rather than dancing expertise. But the experience he does bring comes from being a lifelong self-learner. Malambri would watch dance videos online with friends and then breakdance in the streets.
But when asked whether he prefers to bust it on the dance floor or ride the waves, Rick Malambri was quick to admit he’s partial to the waves. Rick has been surfing ever since growing up in Florida, and surfing is just naturally a part of who he is. He is passionate about both dance and surfing and is excited that he is able to experiment with his both his passions on the West Coast. Let’s just say Rick is not a big fan of humidity, and who could blame him! Besides surfing, Rick admits to being a bit of a certified geek. He built his first computer with his uncle at age eleven and is a big fan of all the gizmos and gadgets on the market. What’s the one thing Rick can’t live without? His beloved iPad. But no worries, he’s the hybrid type and of course has a desktop, iPod, and other tech toys to complement.
