We remember John Schneider as the young man on Dukes of Hazzard and Jonathan Kent from Smallville. He currently stars in, "The Haves and the Have Nots" on OWN, which is in its second season.
Recently, Schneider did a promotional photo shoot for the show. He was his usual light-hearted and humorous self for the shoot, joking around and being relaxed with his co-stars and photographer Jeremy Cowart.
It might have been the greatest acting performance of Schneider's life. During the lunch break, he learned his father was dead. Here are some of the photos from the "The Haves and the Have Nots" shoot.
After the shoot was over he quietly pulled the photographer Cowart to the side. Schneider wanted to stop acting and show his pain.
"There's something going on and I just need a photo," Schneider told Cowart.
Cowart, a photographer based in Nashville, didn't know what was going on. He just started snapping photos. It wasn't long before Schneider started to weep. Cowart had no clue Schneider had lost his father. Here are the portraits.
Cowart wrote about the experience of taking the photos on his blog Thursday.
“He was so good at impressions that I thought this was another impression and I thought ‘wow, what an acting talent.’
"But then after a couple of frames, I could tell that this wasn’t an act. He was really somewhere else.
"Finally, I put my camera down. This was too real. It didn’t feel right to keep shooting.
"So I walked up to him and hugged him.
"He whispered in my ear ‘My Dad died about an hour ago. I found out during our lunch break. And I wanted you to capture that for me.’”
The genuine pain and anguish in Schneider’s expression is immediately evident in the photos. They capture an emotion that many people regrettably know all too well. They encapsulate an intimate moment rarely seen, particularly in the celebrity world, where such occasions are often kept private.
We contacted Cowart about using these photos. He agreed, but told us Schneider wanted to add a quote for the story.
"There is a hole in New York where my father used to be."
