Author of the Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling, is one of the world’s richest women. She has sold more than 400 million copies of her books and had amazing success with the Hary Potter film series. She made it on the Forbe’s annual billionaire list until recently when she said for various reasons that she was no longer a billionaire.
Along with high taxes, Rowling reportedly did not make the list because she had given so much money away in charitable donations. It has been estimated that she has given $160 million away to various causes.
Rowling has given her money away to organizations that aid one-parent families, children, and multiple sclerosis research. She also set up the Volant Charitable Trust, which focuses on issues surrounding women and children.
Rowling is reported to have even more money than the Queen of England, and is also the wealthiest woman in show business. When she was a billionaire, she was just one of 79 women among 1014 men on that list in 2003.
We applaud JK Rowling’s willingness to give rather than focusing on amassing her wealth for herself. What good is money for if you don’t use it to bring happiness and help people in the world?
