Joan Rivers' comedic reign as Hollywood's perennial laughter queen has officially ended. The 81-year-old comedienne died on Thursday night at NYC's Mount Sinai hospital following last week's cardiac arrest.
There will be no more of her rocking the stage with her razor-sharp wits and self-deprecating humor.
Rivers made a career out of saying contentious things about issues that others wouldn't even go near. During the course of her 55-year-long stay in showbiz, such moments came very often, and became her trademark.
To honor the comedic memories of this great artist, here are some of the most controversial things she has said:
1- Her Vicious Attack On Palestinian Victims
Even the staunchest of pro-Israelis couldn't say what Rivers said in the blink of an eye. This happened last month, and remains her latest and probably the most controversial remark to date. She branded the people who've died in the Israel Palestine clash 'idiots' with 'low IQs' before adding: "When you declare war, you declare war. They started it. We now don't count who's dead. You're dead. You deserve to be dead. You started it. You started it. Don't you dare make me feel sad about that.”
2- The Joke About Heidi Klum's Dress
Rivers herself is Jewish, but that didn't stop her from making a joke about the Holocaust that upset many people. Talking about Heidi Klum's incredible golden dress at the 2013 Academy Awards, she said: “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.”
3- Trivializing Ariel Castro's Victim's Pain
Earlier this year, Rivers caused uproar by comparing her daughter Melissa Rivers' guestroom with the one in which Ariel Castro captivated his three victims for over a decade and repeatedly abused them.
Her insensitive joke this time was: "I'm still in the same stupid little room. I mean, those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space. I mean, it is just the worst."
A few days later she added more to it instead of backing down. "They got to live rent free for more than a decade . . . One of them has a book deal," she said. "Neither are in a psych ward. They're OK. I bet you within three years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars."
4- Calling President Obama Gay And First Lady a Transgender
At a gay wedding, Rivers was asked if she thinks America could ever have a gay president. Sometimes a simple yes or no is the right choice, but not with Rivers. She said:
"We already have it with Obama, so let's just calm down," she said. "You know Michelle (Obama) is a trans."
When asked to elaborate, she added: "A transgender. We all know it."
5- Mocking Lindsay Lohan's Miscarriage
You never kick a man when he's down. It's just bad Karma. Despite her shenanigans, it was sad when she suffered miscarriage. When Rivers was asked to comment on LiLo's personal tragedy, she ended up implying in a joke that the actress might have aborted instead of suffering miscarriage.
"I hope she kept it," Rivers said. When it seemed that her daughter Melissa wasn't in agreement with those remarks, she added: "Excuse me, what do you think I am?I was born with a coat hanger in my ear."
6- Her Comments On Children
"I hate kids," Rivers said after two kids irritated her on a flight. "Where's Susan Anthony when you need her? Oh wait. No, not Susan Anthony. Casey Anthony."
In case you don't remember, Casey Anthony is the mom who was tried for the first-degree murder of her daughter Caylee Anthony.
7- Slamming Lena Dunham For Her Weight
Rivers once said she is a fan of Lena Dunham's music, yet she can't stop slamming her for her weight. The octogenarian has cracked jokes at Dunham's expense on a number of occasions. One time, she said that she will drag HBO to court if they show Dunham’s “a—, boobs or tattoos” one more time.
