The American population owes a whopping $12 trillion in debt. As John Oliver elaborated on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, our nation’s debt has created a dirty industry of debt buying which all too often easily preys on the ill.
To prove how easy it is to get into debt collecting, Last Week Tonight purchased its own debt acquisition company in Mississippi for about $50.
“Debt-buying is a grimy business and badly needs more oversight, because as it stands any idiot can get into it. And I can prove that to you because I am an idiot and we started a debt-buying company. And it was disturbingly easy.”
After a twenty minute segment in which Oliver discussed the ugly business of debt collectors, he announced that the show would be purchasing 9,000 people’s medical debt through their company, which amounted to nearly $15 million.
At the end of the segment, Oliver pressed on a giant red orb which somehow indicated that the millions had been given away in such a philanthropic move that even Oprah might be impressed.
