John Oliver and Michael Bolton say the IRS is important “because you never miss your anus till it's gone."

John Oliver took on the Internal Revenue Service on Last Week Tonight as the United States prepares for Tax Day on Wednesday.

The host advised his viewers not to blame the IRS for their tax day miseries but instead direct all that rage toward Congress, which is eventually responsible for all the problems.

“The fact is, blaming the IRS because you hate paying your taxes is like slapping the checkout clerk because the price of eggs has gone up, he said. “It’s not her fault. She’s just trying to help you get out of the store.”

Referring to it as the “anus of our country,” Oliver noted the reason IRS is so unpopular is probably because it combines two of the things people hate most in life, “somebody taking our money and math.”

For further elaboration, Oliver then called Grammy-winner Michael Bolton onstage and together they performed an ode to the IRS – the lyrics of which go as follows:

“You're the anus of our country, don't you know

Tell me how are we supposed to live without you?

We couldn’t functionally survive

And though saying this cuts me like a knife

We need the IRS to stay alive

Because you never miss your anus till it's gone."
