While it might not seem far-fetched that someone would make a biopic surrounding the bizarre antics and fascinating wealth of Donald Trump, Johnny Depp isn’t likely the first actor that comes to mind to portray the real estate mogul turned Republican presidential candidate.
On the same night that Trump won the GOP primary in New Hampshire, Funny or Die released “Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie” — a 50-minute biopic starring Depp as Trump and produced by Academy Award nominee Adam McKay.
“It was a crazy, completely nuts idea that somehow we pulled off,” McKay told the New York Times about the surprise production, which was kept under wraps until it began streaming on the website Wednesday.
The “faux film” was shot over the course of four days in December, according to Yahoo News. The project was put together quickly because the production team expected Trump to be irrelevant by now, as we all did.
“The plan was to move really fast because we thought Trump would go away, as least as a presidential candidate,” Funny or Die Editor-in-Chief Owen Burke told the newspaper. “When he bizarrely didn’t go away, we had a little more time.”
Trump has been a Funny or Die target before, but this exceeds even the most jarring of parodies.
Depp — who is known for playing very flamboyant characters such as Captain Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka —is almost unrecognizable as he completely transformed into the Donald with a team of professional makeup artists at his side.
Other characters are played by Jack McBrayer, Patton Oswalt, Alfred Molina, Henry Winkler, Andy Richter and Jacob Tremblay, among others. Michaela Watkins, known for her work on “Saturday Night Live” and the Fox sitcom “New Girl,” was cast as Ivana Trump, according to the New York Times.
The timing for this film, titled after Trump’s 1987 best-selling business advice book, couldn't have been any better with him currently leading the Republican presidential race.
While we are all very much tired of Trump and wish he would just go away, any opportunity to make fun of him or at the very least, annoy him, is always welcome.
