This was the only way for 2016 to end.
And now, for the grand finale, 2016 is taking out Mariah Carey live on stage pic.twitter.com/kfBJxXjepB— The Ostrich (@ALostrich) January 1, 2017
Mariah Carey was supposed to performing live at the Times Square New Year’s Eve festivities, one of the biggest and most visible celebrations worldwide.
The singer had earlier kept the organizers in suspense by not being 100% sure if she would be able to make it. Whipped up into a frenzy, the organizers booked an apartment in the Times Square Hotel for Carey to get her hair and makeup done, in fear that the singer might not be able to make it to the venue from her Manhattan apartment in time. Even as she arrived at Times Square, she had to be carried on stage by her boyfriend and back-up dancer, Bryan Tanaka.
On stage, luck was clearly not on the diva’s side. A technical glitch botched the singer’s lip sync performance. Having already flown into a rage, Carey made no effort to sing. Visibly annoyed, she stormed around the stage. She performed a brief dance routine to salvage her performance, before giving up entirely and asking the audience to finish the lyrics for her.
“We’re missing some of these vocals, but it is what it is,” she said. “Let the audience sing.”
"I'm trying to be a good sport here."
As the first song wrapped up, a frustrated Carey said, “I wanted a holiday too, can't I just have one.”
By the end of the second song, she bitingly said, “Bring the feathers, it just don't get any better.” And then she marched away.
Later, the singer took to Instagram, uploading a video with the caption “Shit happens.” It truly does.
