After weeks of rumors, Marvel has officially confirmed Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver respectively in the upcoming Marvel film, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
For those unfamiliar with the comics, Quicksilver possesses super speed, while his sister, Scarlet Witch, has the ability to manipulate “chaos magic,” which in turn allows her to alter probability. Both of these powers are certain to bring worthwhile visual effects and action sequences in the coming film. Furthermore, with a cinematic universe that has been relatively based in reality, it will be interesting to see how director Joss Whedon will present such characters.
The younger sister of famous twins, Mary Kate and Ashley, Olsen has been forging a substantial career in the last few years. In 2011, the actress gained a number of award nominations for her performance in the drama thriller, Martha Marcy May Marlene, including a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress. Although her career is limited compared to the many big names that she will star alongside (e.g. Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., etc.), Olsen’s lack of prominence may bring some freshness to the franchise.
Taylor-Johnson, however, is no stranger to the superhero universe, having starred as the title character in Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2. While this immediate transition into another superhero role may be a bit too soon, Marvel knows from experience that such a move can, in fact, work (looking at you Chris Evans). That said, Taylor-Johnson will have to find his chatty side, as unlike Kick-Ass, Quicksilver thinks and talks rather quickly, which is certain to factor greatly into the character’s dialogue.
Also starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to release May 1, 2015.
