There are two things that happened at the Miss World 2014:
- Miss South Africa Rolene Strauss won the Miss World 2014, and
- Aishwarya Rai Bachan was named the most successful Miss World
Aishwarya Rai, the Bollywood actress and Miss World 1994 was honored for her commitment to 'beauty with a purpose' since winning the crown two decades ago.
"I stand here overwhelmed by this honor. I thank Miss World Organization for such an incredible honor that I have received..." she said in her acceptance speech.
"To have the opportunity to hold the title, to wear the crown with pride... that was my one time to go out there and experience beauty with a purpose...," she added.
Humble though her words may be but the last 20 years of her life have been full of not only fanfare but purpose as well.
More than anything else, Aishwarya Rai Bachan proves beauty does come with brains and dumbness has more to do with brains (the lack of) than beauty.
Aishwarya was an architecture student before she entered modeling though she never completed her degree she did achieve other big things including a name in cinema, Indian and Hollywood as well as a prominent face of leading international brands like L'Oreal and Longines watches.

She has done Hollywood films including Mistress of Spices (2007), The Last Legion (2007) opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and Steve Martin's The Pink Panther 2 (2009).
Her off-screen roles include duties as a brand ambassador for several charity organizations and campaigns; Rai is the brand ambassador for The Eye Bank Association of India's nationwide campaign to promote eye donation and Pulse Polio, a campaign established by the Government of India in 1994 to eradicate polio in India. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UN Microcredit Spokesperson and supports PETA India.
It is true, beauty contestants are best known for their idiotic answers and blank stares and the contests are usually rife with controversies, this is not always the case. For those who think Aishwarya Rai Bachan is a rare case, this years’ Miss World proves them wrong.
Giving substance to the fact that beauty can have brains is the current Miss World Rolene Strauss who is a bilingual fourth year medical student. There seems to be nothing stupid or dumb about her. She says becoming Miss South Africa and Miss World and studying medicine were her 'childhood dreams'.
