The show is often likened to Friends and has a similar cult-like following and comparable storyline. The show follows the lives of Ted Mosby, Barney Stinson, Robin Scherbatsky, Marshall Eriksen, Lily Aldrin and Tracy McConnell – a bunch of friends who spend most of their time at the Irish bar MacLaren’s. HIMYM chronicles these friends growing together – from falling in and out of love, marriage and divorce, to growing professionally and personally.
Without further ado, this is how the story line that has lasted for 9 seasons panned out in the last episode:
Ted Meets… the Mother: We already know the ‘Mother’ is the bass player in the band playing at Barney and Robin's wedding; Tracy McConnell. The finale shows the first time they met which was at the Farhampton train station.
Barney And Robin Get A Divorce: Barney and Robin’s marriage lasted for three years. In the words of Barney, “This isn't a failed marriage; it's a successful marriage that only lasted three years.”
Barney falls in love for the time in his life: Afterwitnessing the birth of his newborn daughter, (not from Robin), Barney genuinely falls in love for the very first time in his life.
Robin Doesn’t Feel The Same: Robin has an epiphany that she just doesn’t belong anywhere anymore. She parts with the gang to pursue her news anchor career, but despite being exceedingly busy, she shows up for Ted’s wedding.
Ted Mosby Takes It Slow: Ted and the mom are in no rush to get married. However after seven years and two kids they finally tie the knot.
Marshall Becomes a Judge: Marshall ultimately becomes a judge in Queens. He announces he’s running for New York State Supreme Court on Ted and Tracy's wedding day.
The Mother… Dies: In the following years, Tracy suddenly falls ill and dies. The scene cuts to the present day, six years after Tracy's death, with Ted finally finishing his story.
Teds Ends Up With Robin: His two teenage children understand their father’s intentions and give their blessings to date "Aunt Robin". The finale ends with Ted’s arrival at Robin's apartment. In a nod to the pilot episode, Ted brings with him a blue French horn in hand.

I'm so confused. I've never experienced so many emotions. Am I crying because I'm happy or sad? What on Earth just happened? #HIMYMFinale— David Helman (@HelmanDC) April 1, 2014
perfect end to a perfect show... #HIMYMFinale— adam (@flymuthafxcka) April 1, 2014
i'm so disappointed, could it not have ended NICELY with everyone still married and NOT DEAD. could have been so much better #HIMYMFinale— LOUDER (@LeasFangirl) April 1, 2014
#HIMYMFinale was lame, Robin and Barney shouldn't have separated. Very funny show, but a predictable and weak ending that we all saw coming.— ThrillzAnoNcali (@dlow858) April 1, 2014
My life goal is to become rich enough to hire all the actors again and re-create the finale the correct way. #HIMYMFinale— Logan Walker (@LoganWalker1130) April 1, 2014
Finally, it's over. Amazing how, over the years, HIMYM slowly evolved into HIWYT - How I Wasted Your Time. #HIMYMFinale— Nigel Britto (@NigelBritto) April 1, 2014
The best part of the #HIMYMFinale was watching it alone so no one could see the immense shame of me turning into an emotional wreck— Matt Shore (@Shorester) April 1, 2014
So, what did you make of the finale? Do you think the producers did justice to one of the most iconic sitcoms with a realistic ending? Or do you think it was overkill with too many plot twists?
