“I hope that my presence on your screens and in magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty, but also, get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside,” Lupita Nyong’o.

Lupita Nyong’o was voted 2014 People’s most beautiful woman of the year. This is an honor for anyone, but because it was Lupita Nyong’o, many social commentators are saying this could redefine what beauty is in America.

Nyong’os’ response on being named the “most beautiful” was one of excitement and happiness. "It was exciting and just a major, major compliment. I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it] and feel a little more seen,” stated the Oscar winner to People.

The 12 Years a Slave star has been very outspoken about her struggle with self-acceptance and beauty. She gave an amazing speech at the Black Beauty Essence Magazine awards, about how she overcame her self-image issues and hopes to be a role model to others that struggle with the same thing.

Many others are extremely happy that Nyong’o was named People’s Most Beautiful. “The idea of beauty has been so twisted over the years,” stated Entertainment journalist Holland Reid, “and to see this beautiful dark skinned, perfect complexion, black, intelligent, Ivy League, educated, talented, woman, filled with joy and happiness, Oscar winner, who else could it have been?”
