The Saddest Celebrity Divorces That Broke Our Hearts Too

OK, so we might be overly involved here. But these celebrity breakups took people by surprise and caused some grief for fans.

It's always sad when a relationship breaks down. Let's face it, some celebrity relationships survive longer than we'd ever guess and we're rarely shocked when they call it quits. But some celebrity divorces took us by surprise and even broke our hearts a little. When two people seem so perfect from the outside, we just want things to work out between them.

These are some of the celebrity break-ups that made us question if love is even real.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston

The fairy tale romance and marriage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston ended in a divorce. The couple met in 1998 and married in 2000, back when Aniston was the famous Rachel on Friends and Pitt's career was red hot. They were the It Couple in in Hollywood. Many blame Angelina Jolie for the split. The film Mr. and Mrs. Smith introduced Brangelina and their love story started quietly in 2004. Although it's been a decade and Aniston herself said she's sick of the questions about her 2005 divorce, the break up between Brad and Jennifer is still a hot topic after all these years.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and actress Gwyneth Paltrow looked stunning together. Not only did they appear perfect on the screen but their relationship seemed ideal as well. The couple met in 2002 and announced their divorce in March of 2014. Oh sorry, their decision to "consciously uncouple." They split up after 11 years of marriage and two kids. Despite the divorce, the two still plan on remaining close friends, so we can still have hopes for them to reunite.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were THE Hollywood couple in the 1990s. They met on the set of the movie Days of Thunder in 1989 and became Mr. and Mrs. Cruise on December 24, 1990, adopting two children during their 10-year relationship. But differences emerged (long rumored to include Cruise's extreme devotion to Scientology), and they divorced in 2001. Kidman referred to their relationship as existing in "a bubble" but said it was "deeply romantic."

Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon

We all fell in love with this couple after Cruel Intentions was released. Ryan and Reese were married for seven years and share two children. But soon after Reese Witherspoon took home the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Walk The Line, the marriage began to fall apart; the pair separated in October 2006 and filed for divorce a month later. The stars cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their divorce.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

While the couple appeared happily married, Jennifer Lopez's life has hardly been as picture perfect as it may seem. Lopez and Marc Anthony tied the knot on June 5, 2004, and kept it to themselves for more than six months. The two welcomed twins Max and Emme in February 2008 but separated in July 2011. Anthony said the bottom line was that the marriage just no longer “worked,” but despite the split, he will always have feelings for Lopez and love her for giving her the two most lovable things in his life. Aww.
