Okay, does this character on a popular television show remind you of anyone?
If you said "no" or someone other than Obama, than tell The History Channel, because they will be happy to hear that. The History Channel has drawn some unexpected controversy for their show "The Bible," because one of the actors, some would say, looks a lot like President Obama, and that guy happens to play Satan.
Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the creators of the Bible miniseries, wrote a statement denying anything beyond a random, meaningless coincidence:
“This is utter nonsense. The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics– including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President.”
Downey added: "Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love our President, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try and discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible.”
The kerfuffle has inspired the twitter hashtag #ObamaIsNotSatan (trending nationally at the time of writing). It's mostly right-wingers making easy jokes, but this one, a reference to Obama's drone program, was pretty clever:
#ObamaIsNotSatan One rains down fiery death from the skies to smite his enemies. The other is the devil.— Razor (@hale_razor) March 18, 2013
While the whole thing is a little dicey for the History Channel, publicity tends to be good publicity, and I'd be willing to bet The Bible gets more viewers because of this.
