Selena Gomez performed “Come & Get It” live on Sunday night at the MTV Movie awards. After her performance many were offended by the young stars choice of accessories. People took to Twitter to vent their feelings about Selena Gomez wearing a Bindi during her performance. Officials at The Universal Society of Hinduism are demanding an apology.
A Bindi is a mark worn on the center of the forehead, usually worn by Hindu women. It can be made out of ash and colored paste or a piece of jewelry may be used instead. According to wisegeek.com, “the bindi marks the sixth chakra, an important source of power and balance. A mark on the site facilitates the flow of energy, and also helps to keep demons away.”
In spite of all the symbolism and religious significance involved in wearing a Bindi, many women wear them as decorative pieces, even if they are not Hindu. Such is the case with Selena Gomez.
Selena has not made any public apology at this time. What do you think about Selena Gomez’ Bindi? Was she being culturally and religiously insensitive? Or do you think it’s not that big of a deal? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
