This year’s MTV Movie Awards turned out to be quite an emotional affair.
First, Vin Diesel paid a moving tribute to his late costar Paul Walker by singing “See You Again,” then Shailene Woodley dedicated her big win of the night to The Fault In Our Stars author John Green with a beautiful speech that moved him to tears.
The 23-year-old actress won the award for Best Female Performance for playing cancer-stricken Hazel Grace Lancaster in the movie adaptation of Green’s emotional young adult book which made millions of teens – and young adults – sob relentlessly.
Instead of delivering a typical, run-of-the mill acceptance speech, Woodley opted to honor Green. She thanked him for being the human that he is, and for living every single day of his life with compassion.
“I feel like this award belongs to John Green – who I’m staring at right now – because he gave this world a beautiful masterpiece, a gift in the book The Fault in Our Stars,” said Woodley. “It changed my life when I read it, and being a part of this film dramatically influenced who I am today.”

John Green later took to Twitter to praise the actress.
I love Shailene Woodley. Overwhelmed and grateful for her friendship and for her being hazel so brilliantly.— John Green (@johngreen) April 13, 2015
The Fault in Our Stars also won the Best Movie Award while Woodley took home the special Trailblazer Award and the award for Best Onscreen Kiss, which she shares with her TFIOS costar Ansel Elgort.
