Socality Barbie's Instagram Makes Cliche Hipster Trends Look Absurd

Cierra Bailey
This Barbie's Instagram account is cleverly calling out the stereotypical, worn-out, unrealistic trends that flood our timelines.

Instagram parody account @socalitybarbie has the hipster lifestyle trend down to a science and everybody's loving its accuracy.

Everything from latte art to hashtag overkill and photos taken from obscure angles can be found on this one page.

Even Barbie's fashion choices depict the ultimate stereotypical hipster with her earth-tone colors, thick frame glasses, slouchy beanie and Herschel backpack.

Let's not forget the captions containing the perfect amount of sarcasm such as one accompanying a dramatic "don't look at me" selfie that reads,

"I've been doing some deep thinking about true community & authenticity lately. but mostly wondering why @instagram & @instagood haven't featured me yet."

The irony and satire of it all is pure genius! Which is exactly what the account's creator was going for.

“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” said the Oregon-based wedding photographer who created the account.

“I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?'” she said.

She reportedly requested to remain anonymous to maintain the authenticity of Socality Barbie.

The world traveler, back-packing adventurer, effortlessly fashionable and the contemplative intellectual can all relish in the ode to "hipsterism" that is Socality Barbie.

But even as cute and funny as the concept is, it serves as a wakeup call regarding the homogeneous nature of social media, Instagram in particular.

“I get it, it’s pretty to look at,” the creator said. “But it’s so dishonest. Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.”
