After President Donald Trump announced the United States will no longer “accept or allow” transgender citizens to serve in the military as it “cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption,” late-night host Jimmy Fallon invited a transgender comedian to respond to the controversial ban on the latest episode of his show.
“The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” welcomed correspondent Patti Harrison to say a few words about the discriminatory ruling.
“I’m a transgender woman and as a trans person, it’s hard to articulate exactly how I feel, but I guess if I had to describe it, I’d say, ‘Donald, you’re so stupid. You are so stupid. You’re lucky you’re so hot,’” Harrison began. “Now, I don’t necessarily want to serve in the military, but I want the right to serve, you know. It’s like, I don’t want to go to your baby shower, but I want the invite.”
That was just the beginning of what turned out to be a scathing takedown of the draft-dodger POTUS and his blatant anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
“When I saw the headline this morning at first I just read, ‘Donald Trump Bans Transgender People.’ And I was like, ‘yeah sounds like him,’” the comedian continued. “But then I realized it was just in the military and I was shocked — because I assumed he already did.”
Harrison also mentioned Kristin Beck, the first openly transgender former U.S. Navy SEAL who also has a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and countless service medals.
“And yet, Trump says transgender people in the military would be a tremendous disruption,” she added. “And I get it. If you constantly draw attention to yourself, spend all day distracting everyone and cost tax payers millions of dollars, the perfect job for you isn’t the military. It’s the president of the United States.”
However, she was also willing to cut the president some slack.
“But you know, I don’t even think Trump knows what ‘transgender’ means,” Harrison said. “He probably thinks transgender people are those cars that turn into robots.”
A number of celebrities also took to Twitter to slam the president’s military ban.
We should be grateful to the people who wish to serve, not turn our backs on them. Banning transgender people is hurtful, baseless and wrong— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) July 26, 2017
Donald: With your ban on trans people from the military, you are on notice that you just pissed off the wrong community. You will regret it.— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) July 26, 2017
There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them? https://t.co/WzjypVC8Sr— Caitlyn Jenner (@Caitlyn_Jenner) July 26, 2017
