Deodorant has long been a staple in Americans daily grooming regimens since the 1940s and is yet another product we place on our bodies with tons of toxic chemicals. When deodorants were first being advertised many people thought of them as unnecessary and unhealthy. Well, they were right about one thing, conventional deodorants are definitely unhealthy. With the active ingredient in deodorant being aluminum chloride there have been many debates as to whether deodorant causes cancer. Below are 5 reasons you should use natural deodorant.
The first reason you should use natural deodorant is that conventional deodorant may cause cancer. You’re probably sick of hearing about how everything causes cancer. But if there are some preventative measures you can take, then why not take them? Some scientists theorize aluminum can cause hormonal effects, especially in women, which mimic the hormone estrogen. An excess of estrogen has been known to promote growth in cancer cells.
However, According to the National Cancer Institute, the question of whether deodorant causes cancer is inconclusive. “There’s no conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer.” The FDA also supports that claim. Wearing natural deodorants can prevent cancer because they do not contain aluminum.
Allows skin to breathe
Your body needs to sweat, it’s healthy and normal. And I’m not talking about those people with over active sweat glands; I’m talking about “normal” people. Conventional deodorant prevents you from sweating. This can result in clogged pores or infections. Natural deodorant allows your skin to breathe while preventing the odor. This is another good reason to use natural deodorant.
Prevents underarm darkening
One problem many women complain about is having dark underarms. Wearing natural deodorant can actually help prevent discoloration in the underarms because it doesn’t contain aluminum and other toxic chemicals which can stain your armpits and clothing.
Do not contain endocrine disrupters
Natural deodorants do not contain endocrine disrupters. What are endocrine disrupters? According to Wikipedia, “The endocrine system is the system of glands, each of which secretes different types of hormones directly into the bloodstream.” Ingredients such as phthalates and parabens are sometimes found in conventional deodorants, these ingredients are toxic and known as endocrine disrupters. They are bad because they throw off the important processes in our body such as metabolism, fertility, and growth because these are controlled by hormones.
It’s better for the environment
Using natural deodorants could actually help the environment by putting less of these toxic chemicals out there. Many big companies have begun creating natural deodorants since consumers have been putting their money towards healthier products.
These are just five of the reasons you should use natural deodorants. What reasons do you think people should wear natural deodorant? Let us know in the comments below.
