Here’s How One Plus-Size Woman Is Changing The Way We See Beauty

“There’s a misconception that big women have low self-esteem. I don’t have low self-esteem,” says Amani Terrel and she proved it as well.

20-year-old Amani Terrell weighs 260 lbs and has a monumental mission: to change the entertainment industry's perception of larger women and for women in general to feel good about their size – whatever it may be.

What Amani did was indeed very brave especially in today’s world where beauty is a more rigid concept. Amani stripped down to her bikini on the Hollywood Boulevard and strutted down like a true diva proving she had nothing to hide or be ashamed of.

”New York has the cowboy, the Naked Cowboy,“she said. “Well, Los Angeles is going to have the plus-sized bikini girl on Hollywood Boulevard.”

The reactions Amani faced from people around were varying. Some cheered; a few others jeered while someone called out to her and said he had lost his appetite proving her point.

”There are kids who are bullied because of their weight. So many people preach “self-love”, however they never wear bathing suits.”

Amani, however, has made it clear that she was not promoting obesity and realized she needed to lose weight. Her message is more that she loves herself regardless.

A studyby the University of Michigan last year found that social media contributes to low self-esteem with people constantly comparing themselves to others.

Amani understands that completely, “You cannot seek validation from other people. The world is very cruel,” she told Fox43. “You must seek validation within yourself and be kind to yourself.”

She has been getting a lot of appreciation online:

Here’s hoping her message reaches across as well.
