First-time mother Cormit Avital was offered the vaccine for whooping cough, also known as pertussis, but she decided against it.
“Being the healthy, fit, organic woman I said, ‘Leave me alone, I don’t need this crap,’” Avital said she initially thought.
Shortly after her daughter Eva was born, however, Avital was diagnosed with the condition and learned her newborn baby contracted it too.
Avital detailed her experience in a recent video for Gold Coast Health, noting that the symptoms started off like a common cold but worsened into something much more horrific.
Baby Eva has had to spend a month in intensive care while her health improves, according to Buzzfeed. Her mother now wishes she had accepted the vaccination when it was offered before she gave birth.
“If I could turn the clock back, I’d definitely take 10 of those vaccinations ‘cause there is nothing more painful than watching your little, tiny [baby] and they can’t breathe in your hands,” she said.
Avital‘s eye-opening story been viewed and shared by thousands.

The clip received some criticism from viewers who questioned its validity, even going as far as to say that the baby Avital is holding throughout the video is a fake doll.
Gold Coast Health spoke out to defend their public service announcement:
“Cormit was motivated by her own difficult experience dealing with whooping cough and has given a heart-felt and honest personal account to prevent others having a similar experience,” it said. “We applaud her decision to do so and she has our full support.”
There have been other publicized situations similar to Avital’s, such as the 19-month-old toddler who died of meningitis after his parents relied solely on natural home remedies to "cure" him including water with maple syrup, juice with frozen berries and a mixture of apple cider vinegar, horse radish root, hot peppers, mashed onion, garlic and ginger root.
Modern medicine exists for a reason; science has made incredible things possible and extends peoples’ lives all the time.
Terminally ill patients — old and young — living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life threatening conditions are afforded a longer, healthier quality of life thanks to modern medicine.
It’s incredibly difficult to grasp why anti-vaxxers are so adamantly opposed to vaccines that are proven to protect against deadly diseases that children are susceptible to.
