How are food colors and dyes bad for us?
Artificial food dyes are derived from petroleum, that really says it all, right? But food dyes are one of the most widely used additives in food products today.
Here are just some of the problems that are caused by food colors:
1. The can cause cancer and tumors
2. Cause allergies and hypersensitivity
3. Provoke ADHD and other behavioral problems in children
Are there any alternatives to artificial dyes?
Yes, there are.
Many natural ingredients such as juice from spinach, pumpkin, carrot, raspberries, beetroot, blueberries etc, as well as the likes of turmeric powder and saffron are not only brilliant but safe sources of natural food colors.
So why are they still being used?
Even the most conscious of eaters end up consuming artificial food colors. Why? Simply because for mass manufacturers, artificial dyes are far cheaper than organic alternatives. At the end of the day, it’s all about profit.
For most of those cooking at home, it’s simply easier to go for the artificial ones, probably because they are unaware of the health-related dangers surrounding consuming these foods.
The last but not the least important fact is the eye-pleasing factor!
Using natural food colors produces less vibrant colors than the commercial dyes. Of course less pleasing to the eye and less mouth watering from the look of them means they won’t sell as well especially when it comes to children.
So the fact that they are a safe option and taste much better, unfortunately, falls behind in the priority list.
