A 12-Year-Old Ohio State Basketball named Reed fan has managed to find levity in his cancer by naming it “Michigan” after Ohio State’s hated rival, the Michigan Wolverines. Reed developed cancer two years ago, and named the cancer Michigan because he wanted to beat it, like usual.
Michigan head coach Brady Hoke heard about Reed’s hilarious cancer nickname, and surprised the boy by visiting him at the hospital. It is unknown exactly what happened, but we can only hope Reed mocked Hoke for totally blowing it in the title game this year.
As an offer of goodwill, Hoke gifted Reed free tickets to attend this November’s annual rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan. Reed will come as Hoke’s personal guest, but will hopefully be allowed to join the Ohio State team, and root them on to victory. The Ohio-State/Michigan matchup, known as “The Game”, is one of college basketball’s hottest games, and tickets to the event are nearly impossible to find. With coach Hoke’s help, this brave boy will have the best seats in the house.
This wonderful story showcases the quiet respect bitter sports rivals hold for one another. In a great sports rivalry, the two teams absolutely hate each other, but also hold deep respect for one another as both sides know that without competition, there is no rivalry.
Reed has admitted that the experience has made it hard to hate Michigan as much as he once did. Don’t worry young, man. You keep fighting the good fight, and you will one day grow into the Michigan-hating Buckeye fanatic we all know you can be.
