Marijuana has been used to help treat a lot of ailments in the body and has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Now studies are revealing that marijuana can help control blood sugar and keep you looking slim and trim. Although marijuana does cause people to become hungrier and to eat more, new findings revealed in The American Journal of Medicine explained that people who smoke marijuana have lower BMI, lower prevalence of obesity, and lower risk of getting diabetes.

Doctors are not sure as to why this would occur. Normally if you increase your caloric intake everything else increases too. Researcher Murray A. Mittleman explained that they found that current users of marijuana actually have a better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers.

From a study by Elizabeth A. Penner, Hanna Buettner, and Murray A. Mittleman published in The American Journal of Medicine stated, “Despite these associations with increased caloric intake, marijuana use has been associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and a lower prevalence of obesity and diabetes mellitus. The mechanisms underlying this paradox have not been determined, and the impact of regular marijuana use on insulin resistance and cardio metabolic risk factors remains unknown.”

There is a lot that remains a mystery about how the body responds to marijuana use. In spite of the unknown effects on the body many swear by its usefulness.
