While people are still searching and waiting for answers in the aftermath of the bombings, Boston Marathon victims are receiving a little comfort from their furry friends. The K-9 Comfort Dogs ministry has trained some comfort dogs, golden retrievers to be exact, to visit people specifically in need of comfort to the communities in Boston.
The K-9 comfort dogs are service dogs specially trained to provide emotional support. Studies have proven that animals can bring a sense of comfort and provide healing for people in distress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pets help decrease blood pressure and loneliness while increasing opportunities to socialize and exercise.
These Comfort dogs were also sent to Newtown, Connecticut after the Sandy Hook shootings back in December. The people at Sandy Hook liked the dogs so much that two of them ended up staying there permanently.
The K-9 Comfort Dogs are headed by the Lutheran Church Charities. There are about a dozen of the dogs. Some of them are so popular they even have their own twitter accounts and followers!
