If you didn’t know what twerking was before Miley Cyrus, then you most likely heard of it after she performed last year at the VMAs . According to Wikipedia the definition of twerking is: a type of dancing which the dancer, usually a woman, shakes her hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion causing the dancer’s buttocks to shake, “wobble” and “jiggle”. After the VMAs twerking became an internet phenomenon. Many videos were uploaded onto YouTube teaching others how to twerk.
Most of these videos were done in good humor and many people laughed them off. Even celebrities such as Ellen twerked on their daytime talk shows. However, not everyone took the twerking craze as a joke. One video that was uploaded about twerking went viral, but not for her ability to be a great twerker. YouTube Vlogger Jae Tracie discussed the message that “over the top twerking” (in public) sends to other people. Jae explained that dancing that way for the world to see sends the message that you do not have self-respect and are skanky.
Many people expressed their opinions either commending or disagreeing with Jae Tracie’s opinions on how twerking in public makes one look. Many people felt that this Vlogger was actually “slut shaming” people like Miley Cyrus and being judgmental. Below are a few examples of some comments people shared on Facebook twerking.
Does twerking actually makes a person appear slutty? Do you think slutty people seriously twerk (not just for fun)? Stating an opinion about the subject does not have to mean that you are “slut shaming” or being “judgmental”. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we’d like to know yours!
