According to AAA, as of July 2014, the national average for regular unleaded gasoline is 14 cents higher than it was a year ago. Boo!
Never fear. Carbonated.TV has rounded up five of the best ways to save at the pump.
1) Don't be a race car driver.
When the light turns green, don't put the pedal to the metal. Accelerate slowly and you'll use less fuel.
2) Use your smartphone.
You can save money with these three apps and there are more out there. Find the one that works best for you.
Gas Buddy: Find the cheap gas stations closest to your current location with directions.
Google Maps: Make sure you don't get lost. Aimless driving to find your way is a big gas waster.
Carticipate: Carpool! This awesome app helps you find other carpoolers in your area. Bonus: You're helping save the environment and you might even make new friends.
3) Find local deals.
Check for loyalty based gas reward programs in your area. For example, when you shop at local grocery stores, some offer a per gallon discount. This summer, Wal-Mart offered discounts. Now is the time to dig in and do some research.
4) Slow down.
You can get a ticket for going too fast. But you'll also burn fuel quicker at higher speeds. Stick to the speed limit.
5) Use a gas credit card.
Find a card that not only gives points or a percentage back for your gas purchases. There are also cards that give rewards on non-gas purchases. And of course, pay these off each month to avoid late fees.
So fill up and get going. Maybe it's time for a road trip?
