Global Warning Kills Polar Bear (Pictures)

A haunting picture of an anemic, recently-deceased polar bear is going viral as a telltale sign that the negatives effects of global warming are here. The arctic ice caps have steadily declined in size and duration across the past few decades, but rarely before has a clearer picture of the realities of global warming come out than that of this dead polar bear.

The 16-year-old bear died of starvation after global warming decreased the levels of sea ice in the bear’s arctic habitat. This sea ice is the primary hunting ground for polar bears, as it is where polar bears hunt seals to eat. Because there was less sea ice in recent years, the polar bear was forced to travel greater distances to find food. The end result is the death from exhaustion and starvation seen in the photo.

A polar bear expert inspect the photo. He then said, “"From his lying position in death, the bear appears to simply have starved and died where he dropped. He had no external suggestion of any remaining fat, having been reduced to little more than skin and bone."

In 2012, the Artic contained its lowest levels of sea ice on record. It is possible that 2013 will prove even worse for the Arctic ice levels. The climate levels in the arctic have been disturbed since 2005, when an influx of uncharacteristically warm water entered the Artic area, subsequently raising the area’s temperature until this day. It is unknown what the future holds for the artic, and its many animal inhabitants.

Global warming is slowly, but surely, negatively impacting planet Earth. It is unknown how drastic the impact will need to be before the world’s citizens begin to take responsibility for the help of their planet.
