Pizza and health don’t go together: all that cheese and carbohydrates laden gooey goodness can never be healthy. We can only choose either health or pizza. . But what if we told you that pizza, the food item on top of the junk food pyramid, has now gotten a perfect nutritional makeover? Would you believe us?
You might not but British researchers are now claiming that they have developed world's first nutritionally-balanced pizza.
Pizza is generally considered the unhealthiest item of the junk food gang but researchers say that this nutritionally-dubious food item can be made “nutritionally ideal”.
"Traditional pizza should be a low-fat meal containing at least one portion of vegetables, so mainly made from ingredients associated with better cardiovascular health," said Professor Mike Lean, a physician and nutritionist in the School of Medicine at the University of Glasgow.
But commercial pizza recipes these days include much more fat and salt than what’s required ideally, making pizza a hazardous junk from nutritional perspective.
Researchers, who we think are closet pizza lovers, after analyzing how severely unhealthy pizzas are, decided to constitute a nutritionally-balanced pizza. They joined hands with an industrial food producer to make a perfect ‘healthy’ pizza recipe.
They made some major changes to the commercial pizza recipe by reducing salt and adding whole-wheat flour. They also adjusted the proportions of bread base to Mozzarella cheese, before putting it in the oven for testing.
The team put the final result to a taste test with members of the public. Children and adults, both gave it a thumbs-up for its appearance and taste.
World's first nutritionally-balanced pizzas are now available in three flavors at various UK supermarkets.
Imagine eating a ‘healthy’ pizza… We can’t thank these guys enough.
