Thanksgiving 2013 is almost here! This means there will be a ton of eating, black Friday shopping, and spending time with the relatives. It also might mean you get to meet your boyfriend or girlfriends parents for the first time. This can be quite nerve wracking and add to the stress that the holidays can sometimes bring. Below are some tips on how to impress your boyfriend or girlfriend’s parents on Thanksgiving 2013.
Bring a gift
Never meet the parents empty handed. If you are meeting them this Thanksgiving 2013 bringing a nice bottle of wine or their favorite dessert would be most appropriate. The point is to find out what they like and try to get on their best side. First impressions are important and can be difficult to recover from if you don’t give a good one.
Know what you plan on talking about on Thanksgiving 2013 before you arrive. Rehearsing a conversation before it happens may seem a little awkward. But it is important that you have some things in mind to talk about in advance. If you are shy and quiet they won’t be able to get to know you as well, and may even think you are stuck up. So rehearsing what to say will help make this a little easier. Talk about your goals in life, where you came from, and things you enjoy. Do not say anything too negative. Don’t air your dirty laundry. Do not talk negatively about anyone. And never talk about controversial subjects especially when you first meet. You have to establish trust and security first.
Dress to impress
As shallow as it may seem, your appearance does matter. You will be judged by others for it. With that in mind we advise, dress to impress. It’s Thanksgiving, so it’s okay to dress up a little. But try to make sure you air more on the conservative side. You may want to ask your boyfriend or girlfriend how dressy his or her family dresses, so you have some idea of how you should fit in. Try to just be yourself and wear something you are comfortable in, as well as something they would be comfortable seeing you in.
