Legoland Florida has opened its new water park with a splash, with a world record attempt for the highest number of beach balls in the air at the same time.

The previous record stood at 401, but the 1,355 special guests, who also got to sample the water park before its official opening tomorrow (May 26th), smashed the figure.

Organisers originally advertised the record attempt to the first 400 people to show up at the Florida park with the promise of free parking and free admission to the new facility.

However, the lure of being in the Guinness Book of World Records and having the opportunity to be the first to try out the new water park proved very popular.

People started to queue outside Legoland at 10pm the night before the record attempt, which led organisers to expand the event to 1,355 people.

Photos and videos of the event have been sent to Guinness for evaluation and verification so it can become official.

Legoland has a history of hosting obscure world record attempts to advertise its parks around the world.

In 2010, thousands of people dressed as pirates descended on the Windsor park in an attempt to set a new world record for the largest pirate gathering.
