Broken relationships do force a person to take some drastic actions, and a much similar but very different action was taken by Jeff Ragsdale, a stand-up comedian and actor from New York after he was dumped by his girlfriend. Jeff was left ‘near suicidal’ after his break up, he began to realize that in a city with a population of more than eight million, he is the loneliest person.

So Jeff decided to do something drastic-he put fliers up all over the city saying: If anyone wants to talk about anything, call me (347) 469-3173. Jeff, one lonely guy.' And believe it or not the response he got was overwhelming. According to the man who gave the world his number, New Yorkers began calling him in overwhelming numbers and after a week it went viral when he began getting calls from all over the world. In the first day he received over 100 texts and calls. A week later the figure went to thousand.

The figure reached 70,000 with calls and texts still coming thick even after eight months. Around 40% of his call share comes from New York ranging from pimps to prisoners of Wall Street trader. Apart from this he has also been getting calls from countries like Vietnam, England, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Many people called him just to say that he wasn’t alone, others gave him advice on how to overcome the grief, some vented at him, other counseled and he counseled some of them.
The wonderful experience he obtained from this initiative motivated him to write a book about it. Along with two other collaborators, he was able to transcribe the conversations, text messages and voice mails he got to create a memoir called Jeff, One Lonely Guy which was released in March this year.
