SO Ladies, Is Alcohol Your Friend Or Foe?

So, what’s the question? Alcohol is bad, bad and bad. Right? Wrong. Alcohol has its benefits.

Consumed in moderation it is thought to help reduce the risk of heart disease. The French are supposed to have a very low death rate from coronary heart diseasedespite their diet being very high in fat. This could be due to the relatively high consumption of wine in France. Women who drink wine less likely to gain weight. A lower risk of diabetes and dementia has been seen in women and men.

So, why are we singling out women here? Well, for one alcohol seems to affect women more than men. Apparently men can hold liquor better than women. Studies show that women’s liver cells have less of an enzyme, which breaks down alcohol, so it stays in circulation longer, having a greater effect. Also women have a proportionally higher ratio of fat to water than men and so are less able to dilute alcohol within the body. Because of this, women will have a higher concentration of alcohol in their blood than men after drinking the same amounts of alcohol

But that could be a load of hogwash, if you please, but there is no denying that women are the child bearers of our species (yes, we know this sounds very sexist) and alcohol can in no way be good for a pregnant lady and here baby; even conceiving one for that matter. But ... (Yes, there’s a but), women drinking in moderation may be able to conceive more easilythan the ones who don’t drink.

Also, over the past few decades women have started drinking more and more. A big reason for it is that women are leading freer lives and have more individual finances to enjoy drinks, whether socially or in the comfort of their homes. One survey found that one in six womenhave had unsafe sex after drinking too much
