Republican congressman Todd Akin has taken a stance against abortion under any and every circumstance. Many were angry and disturbed by Todd Akin’s comments made on the subject of abortion and rape. Akin was asked if he thinks abortion should be legal for women who get raped.
Todd Akin’s comment on abortion and rape was made during an interview that aired on a St. Louis television station KTVI-TV. Akin’s said that he believes, “people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”
Todd Akin’s comment on abortion and rape implied that a woman getting pregnant after being raped is not that common. And if it does happen then the female’s body will somehow prevent itself from getting pregnant. Akin’s camp went into damage control soon after that interview releasing this comment: “In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year.”
