U.S. Olympian Ryan Hall has chosen to forgo traditional methods of training for the summer Olympics because he says “God is my coach”. Ryan Hall is a marathon runner competing in the London Olympics 2012. Hall calls this form of training faith based training.
“I call this kind of coaching faith based coaching as I apply what I learn in my faith to my running” Ryan Hall explained. According to The Christian Post Hall began this faith based training when he left his former coach, Terrance Mahon, because he seemed to have lost his faith in Ryan Hall’s determination after he was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in 2010. “I got to a position in the fall of 2010 where I wanted to put myself in a position where I am desperate to hear from God” stated Hall. So he switched coaches and began relying on God to teach him the strategies he needs.
When the CNN reporter questioned Ryan as to how God coaches him Ryan responded, “It’s pretty simple. I just get up every morning and I ask God questions.” Ryan Hall has posted second-fastest marathon time every by an American of 2:06.17 with his 5th place finish at the 2008 London Marathon.
