Did you ever think about what happens to sex workers after they stop working? Faced with uncertain conditions throughout their lives, many sex workers have unstable futures after retirement as well.
A photographer and writer teamed up to show the lives of retired sex workers in Mexico City. The women live at Casa Xochiquetzal, a shelter for sex workers who are off the job and a community center for active sex workers -- the only such shelter of its kind worldwide, according to photographer Benedicte Desrus.
Desrus spent years at the shelter documenting the women's lives. She said she wants her work to inspire people to think about women's rights, stereotypes and discrimination.
