Photographer Steve Rosenfield is trying a simple experiment: photograph people with their biggest insecurity written on their skin. This turns people inside out: instead of their emotions hidden within the person, they are legible on their skin. This displays that person's inner world in a very direct way.

Rosenfield calls this the What I Be project. He has taken hundreds of these photos. Here is a small sample of them (all images from the whatibeproject Instagram page):

We are so used to seeing people on a surface level, that it's jarring to have their biggest fears presented like this. It's an important reminder that whatever is visible on the outside, people have complex inner worlds.
