Tiffany Austin, who is a member of the gym Planet Fitness in Richmond Ca., has experienced an interesting form of discrimination for being too toned. While Tiffany was doing her workout she was confronted by a staff member and was asked to cover up due to some complaints from other gym members about her gym attire.
The staff member stated that some other gym members felt intimidated by her toned body. Tiffany became very upset with Planet Fitness and believes that they are not living up to their statement of not being judgmental. “Really I felt like I was being intimidated and harassed by the place that says ‘no intimidation.’” She believes that she is being judged for how she looks, even if it is for being too toned. Perhaps the people complaining just felt bad about their own physique?
One member of Planet Fitness stated, “It’s unfair to show off your body and that’s what they don’t want.” Derek Van Reheene, the California Director of Athletic Studies Center commented on the incident, “In a lot of ways I think that what Planet Fitness doing is a positive thing. They obviously need to iron out some of these issues, but you know, sport in the United States is by nature discriminatory. It is selective, it is elitist.”
What do you think of Tiffany Austin’s workout attire? Does it expose too much? Or do you think Planet Fitness and it’s other gym members were just being judgmental?
