Named Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela at birth, one of the greatest leaders in modern history was born in South Africa on 18 July 1918.
He became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement and joined the African National Congress in 1942. For 20 years, he directed a campaign of peaceful, non-violent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies. In 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as the country's first black president.
Mandela had been ill for quite some time and passed away on December 5, 2013 at the age of 95.
He spent nearly three weeks in hospital in December with a lung infection and after surgery to remove gallstones. It was his longest stay in hospital since his release from prison in 1990 after serving 27 years for conspiring to overthrow the government under the apartheid regime.
