America is all up and going about the upcoming US Presidential Elections 2012 and the race has finally narrowed down between current President Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
There are a lot of opinions out there and of course the vote banks are divided. Obama’s ruling years have not been easy ones, but the last decade has not been an easy decade for any government. There are a large number of people who want to see Obama stay at the White House for another term and there are people who think there cannot be a bigger mistake if it happens.
Even history has a take on it. It does not remember American second term presidencies in a really good light, but then by coming in to power Obama has made history, altered centuries of traditions and mind sets. There is no doubt he can prove history wrong as well.
Here is why:
President Obama has managed to enact major reformsin education, health, economy and basic human rights. He has had a tough road to begin with. But he has managed to fight his way forward bringing betterment to his people in the best way he could remaining with in the realms of reality.
Here are 10 things that Obama did and are reason enough for him to stay in the White House and carry his work forward.
1 The Healthcare Reform:
Obama accomplished the Herculean task of expanding health coverage to 32 million more Americans at the same time bringing down the deficit by an estimated $1.3 trillion over the next 20 years. He made it illegal to deny coverage for people with pre-existing conditionsso they could get the help they needed and not get bogged down by loans and bankruptcy.
He has also attempted to lower health care costs by forcing all Americans to have medical insurance and pay their share so the system.
Furthermore, Obama provided federal support for stem-cell and new biomedical research.
2 Financial Reforms:
When Obama got elected, the economic situation was hair rising to say the least. This one hurdle was though to bring him down before he even started. But he has proven his opponents and critics wrong.
His financial reform legislation provides a system to allow the government to break apart large financial institutions that threaten the economy and creates a council of federal regulators to coordinate the detection of risks to the financial system. He also created a Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection to help protect citizens from unscrupulous practices like banks trading in risky steps like credit derivatives.
His Treasury Department plan to invite private capital into the country’s largest banks was responsible for getting the banks back on their feet. America could easily have gone in to depression but it hasn’t so far. That says something about the man leading the nation.
3 Education reforms:
His government has made higher college more accessible and affordable through significant increases in scholarships and funding.
His administration is also working on making the student loan debt easier. The “Pay As You Earn” program, expected to start by the end of 2012, will allow borrowers to cap their monthly payments at 10 percent of their discretionary income. It will also forgive the balance of borrowers’ debt after 20 years of payments.
4 The War on Terror:
He brought the war in Iraq to an end and brought troops back homeand he did it all in a way that was responsible both to his troops as well as the land they wee leaving after years of war.
The war in Afghanistan is set to end by 2013. From a peak of 101,000 troops in June 2011, U.S. forces are now down to 91,000, with 23,000 slated to leave by the end of summer 2012.
Let’s not forget Osama Bin Laden, the man behind Al-Qaeda and all major terrorism activity. He is no more. The threat as well as the man eliminated during his term in office and no doubt under his leadership.
His government managed to pass a legislationand implemented regulations on power plants, factories, and oil refineries to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
6 Curbing the Nuclear Race:
Obama managed to bring US and Russia on an understanding to lower the nuclear weapons count.
7 The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act:
For the first time in history the U.S. Food & Drug Administration can regulate the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of tobacco.
Under him the Food and Drug Administration has also been given the authority to recall tainted food and step-up inspections of food processing facilities.
8 Gay Rights:
Obama’s repeal of the DADT “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military for the first time.
With his comments on homosexuals and gays having equal rights to marry as anyone else, Obama has no doubt proven to be one open minded President towards the rights of LGBT groups.
9 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act:
He signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 into law ensuring federal funding to provide nutritious meals within public schools while also increasing the availability of healthy meals to lower income students.
The act also aims at educating children in healthy diet and lifestyle.
10 The Technology Access Bill for the Disabled:
The legislation requires smart phones, television programs and other modern communications technologies to be accessible to people with vision or hearing loss.
It gives them advantage of new technologies and enables them to enter the digital age and reap its benefits like an ordinary human being.
